Cardiac Services
The Directorate of Cardiac Services in the Armed Forces Hospital Southern Region in Khamis Mushayt (AFHSR) is one of the active Directorates in the hospital which provide medical and surgical services for patients with cardiovascular diseases residing in the southern part of Saudi Arabia.
AFHSR is the only governmental hospital in the south that performs open heart surgery for needy patients.
The Directorate chaired by a Clinical Director and there are two departments under its umbrella; Cardiac Surgery and Adult Cardiology.
The Cardiac Surgery Department
At the moment, there are two Consultant Cardiac Surgeons, one Senior Registrar and one Registrar Cardiac Surgeons.
All kind of emergency and scheduled adult cardiac surgeries are performed in the Department, including CABG, off-pump and on-pump procedures and different heart valve replacements and repairs.
There are two dedicated ICU beds for the post operative cardiac patients in the general multi-system ICU.
There is one cardiac operating room with two perfusionists, two dedicated cardiac anaesthetists and five cardiac surgery OR nurses.
The Adult Cardiology Department
There are three sections in the Adult Cardiology Department.
1) Critical Care Unit
2) Invasive Cardiology with a Coronary Catheterization Laboratory
3) Non-invasive Cardiology which includes Echocardiography Laboratory, ECG/Holter/Treadmill and EEG Laboratories.
The current database for Cardiology Department holds five consultant cardiologists, five registrars and one senior registrar. There are plans to include more Senior Registrars Cardiology in a very near future.
